The Crime Statistics Agency has today released the Victorian recorded crime statistics for the year ending 30 June 2018. In the last 12 months the number of criminal incidents dropped by 5.6% or 22,876 incidents to 383,100. The criminal incident rate also declined by 7.8% to 5,921.9 incidents per 100,000 Victorians. These are the lowest figures since the year ending June 2015.
Both counts and rates of recorded offences are the lowest they have been since the year ending June 2015. The number of recorded offences decreased by 4.9% to 506,862, while the offence rate dropped 7.0% to 7,835.1 offences per 100,000 Victorians.
In the year ending June 2018 the number of victim reports recorded decreased 7.4% to 299,501, the lowest since June 2015. The rate decreased by 9.5% in the last 12 months to 4,629.7 victim reports per 100,000 Victorians, the lowest in the last five years.
In the last 12 months the number of unique victims decreased 7.1% to 228,331 victims, the lowest since the year ending June 2015. Approximately 3 in every 100 people in Victoria were a victim of crime in the year ending June 2018, down 9.2% to 2,912.7 victims per 100,000 population, the lowest rate in the last five years.
Family related incidents decreased 0.5% in the last 12 months to 76,124 incidents. The family incident rate declined by 2.7% to 1,176.7 incidents per 100,000 population. Both figures are the lowest since the year ending June 2015.
Alleged offender incidents increased by 1.0% to 174,793 in the last 12 months. Victorian population growth contributed to the alleged offender rate dropping 1.3% to 2,701.9 per 100,000 population. The number of unique alleged offenders also increased in the last 12 months, up by 2.7% to 82,211.
Crime Statistics Agency Chief Statistician Fiona Dowsley said that ‘the Victorian victimisation rate is the lowest in 5 years and the alleged offender figures are the highest seen in CSA data holdings, which go back to July 2004.”
