The Crime Statistics Agency has today released two 'In Fact' research papers on incidents recorded by police between 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2023 and their pathways through the criminal justice system. They consider how progression varies by offence type (‘In Fact 14’) and alleged offender characteristics (‘In Fact 15’).
The research shows that 22% of all incidents ultimately led to an offender being identified, charged, and had charges proven in court. Drug offences were most likely to progress and Property and deception offences were least likely to progress.
It also shows incidents involving alleged offenders who were male, adult or Aboriginal were more likely to progress compared with females, children or non-Indigenous alleged offenders.
