State wide figures

  1. The number of criminal incidents recorded by Victoria Police in the year to 31 March 2023 was 361,140, up 5.6% from 342,098 incidents recorded in the same period last year. 
  2. The number of offences recorded by Victoria Police in the year 31 March 2023 was 496,589. This is up 5.6% from 470,165 offences recorded in the same period last year.
  3. Alleged offender incidents increased 10.5% to 166,666 in the year to 31 March 2023, up from 150,764.
  4. Victim reports increased in the year to 31 March 2023, up 8.7% (22,629) to 281,329 victim reports.
  5. Family incidents increased in the year to 31 March 2023, up 2.5% from 90,783 to 93,091.
  6. Alleged offender incidents with an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander status increased 21.7% (2,778) to 15,554 in the year to 31 March 2023.
  7. In the year to 31 March 2023 the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander status of those involved in Family incident increased for Affected family members (up 3.6% to 5,306) while Other parties increased (up 2.2% to 6,305).

Criminal Incidents
The highest criminal incident rates in Local Government Areas in the year ending 31 March 2023 were:

  1. Melbourne (14,638.2 incidents per 100,000 estimated resident population, down 6.3%)
  2. Latrobe (10,319.1 incidents per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 2.6%)
  3. Yarra (10,062.3 incidents per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 5.7%)
  4. Mildura (9,636.2 incidents per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 13.0%)
  5. Port Phillip (9,060.9 incidents per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 3.0%).

 

Recorded Offences
The highest recorded offence rates in Local Government Areas in the year ending 31 March 2023 were:

  1. Melbourne (20,059.2 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, down 7.0%)
  2. Latrobe (14,776.8 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 4.3%)
  3. Yarra (14,112.5 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 14.2%)
  4. Mildura (13,234.4 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 9.6%)
  5. Greater Shepparton (13,099.6 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 3.2%).
