Downward trend in the number of young offenders, 2006 to 2015

15 March 2016

An 'in fact' paper released by the Crime Statistics Agency has shown a downward trend in the number of Victorian offenders aged 10 to 14 between 2006 and 2015, with the number down by 37% from 2006-10 to 2011-15.

The paper also found that:

  • The number of 15 to 19 year old offenders remained stable over this period.
  • The total number of offences and offending incidents recorded for 10 to 14 year olds from 2011-15 was lower than the total number of offences recorded for 10 to 14 year olds from 2006-10.
  • The average number of offences and incidents of offending per offender increased by 40.4% and 22.9% respectively for 10 to 14 year olds across the two five-year time periods.
  • Just over half of all offenders aged 10 to 14 continue to have only a single offence recorded in their first five years of offending.
