New statistics released by the Crime Statistics Agency reveal that residential burglaries were most likely to occur on Fridays between 12:00pm and 6:00pm in the year to 31 March 2015 in Victoria.

There were 30,941 residential burglary offences recorded by Victoria police in the last 12 months, decreasing by 0.1 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Mildura Local Government Area (LGA) recorded 919.9 residential burglary offences per 100,000 population, the highest in the state. This was followed by Greater Shepparton (906.9), Darebin (835.4) and Yarra (825.1).

There were 124,590 pieces of property stolen in the commission of residential burglaries in the year to 31 March 2015. The most popular items stolen were:

  • Jewellery (25.6 per cent of all property stolen);
  • Electrical appliances (13.4 per cent);
  • Tools (9.8 per cent);
  • Personal property (9.5 per cent); and
  • Cash/documents (7.7 per cent).

Other more unique items reported stolen during residential burglaries included a bain marie, burglar alarms, an accordion, dentures, cordial, and 35 eskies.

More than 80 per cent of alleged offenders were male, and were most likely to be under the age of 24.
