Media Release: Record numbers of alleged offenders being processed by Victoria Police

The Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) released the Victorian recorded crime statistics for the year ending 30 September 2019 today. 

In the last 12 months the number of criminal incidents increased by 3.7% or 14,367 incidents to 397,849 as did the rates up 1.6% to 6,032.1 incidents per 100,000 Victorians. The number of criminal incidents increased in all offence divisions except for Public order and security offences.

A similar pattern was observed for recorded offences, the number of recorded offences increased by 4.1% to 529,230 offences, while the offence rate increased by 2.0% to 8,024.0 offences per 100,000 Victorians. In the last 12 months the number of recorded offences increased in the all offence divisions except Other offences.

Alleged offender incidents increased by 7.7% (12,889 incidents) to 180,676 in the last 12 months while the rate increased by 5.4% to 3,130.0 per 100,000 population. 

Total victim reports increased by 3.4% to 310,291 as did the business/organisation victim reports which increased by 4.9% to 84,493, the second highest in CSA data history. The person victim reports increased by 2.9% to 225,798 while the victimisation rate increased slightly by 0.8% to 3,423.5 reports per 100,000 Victorians. 

Family related incidents increased 7.4% in the last 12 months to 83,775 incidents. The rate of family incidents increased by 5.2% to 1,270.2 incidents per 100,000 population. 

CSA Chief Statistician Fiona Dowsley said that “the number of alleged offenders processed by Victoria Police has been increasing over the last several year. Since the year ending September 2015 the number of alleged offender incidents recorded has increased 14.5%.
