MEDIA RELEASE
An update on incident-based recorded crime statistics reporting
The Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) has been working on a new reporting measure to better reflect the number of criminal incidents committed in Victoria.
The new measure represents a significant addition to how crime is reported and will provide the community with more relevant and accurate information on crime in Victoria.
The CSA issued a consultation paper on its new incident-based reporting measure in August to help inform the community about the new data and to seek feedback from those who will use the data.
Given the significance in adding a new measure of crime to the state’s recorded crime statistics, the Chief Statistician has now been asked by the Minister for Police to conduct additional engagement with some of the key agencies and stakeholders that will use these new data on a regular basis.
The Chief Statistician has agreed to this request and will carry out this work as a priority.
Given the additional consultation required, the CSA will now release the incident-based measure as part of the September quarterly data released on 14 December 2017.
